چکیده

Awake monkey fMRI and diffusion MRI combined with conventional neuroscience techniques has the potential to study the structural and functional neural network. The majority of monkey fMRI and diffusion MRI experiments are performed with single coils which suffer from severe EPI distortions which limit resolution. By constructing phased array coils for monkey MRI studies, gains in SNR and anatomical accuracy (i.e., reduction of EPI distortions) can be achieved using parallel imaging. The major challenges associated with constructing phased array coils for monkeys are the variation in head size and space constraints. Here, we apply phased array technology to a 4-channel phased array coil capable of improving the resolution and image quality of full brain awake monkey fMRI and diffusion MRI experiments. The phased array coil is that can adapt to different rhesus monkey head sizes (ages 4-8) and fits in the limited space provided by monkey stereotactic equipment and provides SNR gains in primary visual cortex and anatomical accuracy in conjunction with parallel imaging and improves resolution in fMRI experiments by a factor of 2 (1.25 mm to 1.0 mm isotropic) and diffusion MRI experiments by a factor of 4 (1.5 mm to 0.9 mm isotropic).

An implanted 8-channel array coil for high-resolution macaque MRI at 3 T

An 8-channel receive coil array was constructed and implanted adjacent to the skull in a male rhesus monkey in order to improve the sensitivity of (functional) brain imaging. The permanent implant was part of an acrylic headpost assembly and only the coil element loop wires were implanted. The tuning, matching, and preamplifier circuitry was connected via a removable external assembly. Signal-t...

Hole-Slotted Phased Array at 7 Tesla

Introduction The development of RF coils is always focused towards increasing SNR and optimizing the RF penetration into the sample. Multi channel receiver arrays have been shown to increase the SNR and/or the speed (if combined with parallel imaging) in clinical and animal MRI studies [1]. Array coils for high fields are usually based on simple loops and are mostly used in rat imaging studies ...

Scan Time Reduction in fMRI using a 32 channel Phased Array Receive Coil

Introduction: In functional MRI (fMRI) studies, events/blocks are repeated several times so that task related activations are detected more reliably. This often leads to long experiments inducing subject fatigue and/or head motion, the levels of which may confound the results [1]. Moreover, such long experiments might not be feasible on specific subject populations. Typically, reduction in scan...

Improved detection of functional connectivity MRI with 32-channel phased array head coil

Introduction: Spontaneous low-frequency fluctuations (< .1 Hz) in the fMRI time-series exhibit specific networks of the human brain in the absence of a particular task [1-3]. Because of the task-independent nature of these studies, they are especially relevant for understanding brain’s functionality/connectome for both healthy and clinical populations [4]. Although previous studies [5,6] have i...
